Kakizaki Memi Hustle Press gravure #2: comments on other members

The Hustle Press "extra" of Memi has come out. A new outfit and new poses, but the same Memi, with that amazing talent of being able to look right through the camera lens and make contact with the viewer.

It's something she has had ever since her Showroom auditions, and it must be harder to do than it looks, because few models do it. This may have something to do with her apparent fearlessness.

Here are seven of the photos (see more at the link above) and Memi's comments about other members.

The youngest. Baby-faced. But is she an adult inside? A 15-year-old from Nagano with more depths to discover. The Extra for "Memi-tan," Kakizaki Memi.

Every time Hustle Press does a solo gravure of a Keyakizaka46 member, they first do one setting, with an interview; then they do a second setting -- which they call the "Extra" -- asking the subject to give their impressions of all the other members. The characterizations end up being pretty consistent. The Hiraganas seem to have pretty distant impressions of most of the Kanjis.

I liked to see Memi point out the brilliance of Nijika's eyes. And I loved it that she characterized Neru with the first two elements of the Keyakizak46 slogan: modest and kind.

Her saying Habu looked "like a doll" surprised me. High praise, coming from the girl who wants to be a doll. But Habu must be a very different kind of doll from the French doll Memi wants to be.

As I keep saying, Memi may be young and baby-faced, but there seems to be a lot to her. The members of Hiragana keep calling her "adult," and she likes to think of herself as saba-saba, which means something like "refreshingly frank and straightforward."

She looks particularly young in this setting. Perhaps it's the contrast with the clothes.

She calls Shida Manaka "kakkoii" and "ikemen," two words that I find hard to translate. Kakkoii is often translated "cool," but doesn't have that word's associations of cold and distant. It has associations of stylish and somehow magnificent. One Japanese dictionary says it refers to someone who is showy, but whose fresh and invigorating attitude draws you to them. An ikemen is a handsome and sexy guy. And I feel something positive and active about it, rather than just passive handsomeness. At least that's how I perceive the words. Suggestions from Japanese-speakers welcome.
