Portuguese priests converted Japanese on the Islands west of Kyushu -- including especially Neru's own Goto Islands -- in the 1500s. When the government decided that Christians were dangerous to public order, they forced them to renounce the religion. Torture awaited those who refused. I recently saw Martin Scorsese's film version of Endou Shuusaku's novel set in that period. Fairly harrowing, to say the least.
