Kage was born in May 2002, Memi seven months later in December. Kage has always been one of the most active, talkative, capable members. Memi seems a very different person, much less talkative and school-smart. It seems that they have never been as close personally as fans (and Kage) may have liked. I could be wrong, but I think Memi may have found Kage a bit intimidating, for her smarts and activity.

The very first time they were introduced as members of Keyakizaka, Kage reached over and held Memi's hand, thinking to give and get comfort. But Memi was so much in shock at actually being selected that she just didn't hold on, and the moment passed. Since then, people have thought Kage has been disappointed at not getting closer to Memi. For example, as in this photo from a magazine:

 
I think Memi has now begun to learn some of Kage-chan's activity and strong reactions, which work so well on TV, but which are not natural to Memi.

I'm intrigued by the words on Memi's T-shirt in the top photos: "A Girl with Eyes." She is, indeed. I've looked around online for what the shirt refers to, but can't find anything -- from 1983 or any other year.

I think Kage-chan has become dramatically prettier in recent months. Maybe "the bloom of 17" is real, like the analogous American expression "sweet sixteen."
